Preveza Prefecture
The Regional unit of Preveza is the smallest in size and third in population regional unit of Epirus. It occupies the southwestern part of Epirus and is characterized by a geographical and economic isolation with many intra-regional disparities. It is located in a secluded area; away from the Greek or even European centers of economic activity. The economy of Preveza is based mainly on agriculture (citrus fruit, cereals, grapes, olive oil, vegetables) and livestock (goats). An important part of the income also comes from the exploitation of the forest but not so much from the mineral resources (lignite) that can be found in the area. The level of industry is rudimentary and limited to processing agricultural products.
Over the last years, the tourism of Preveza has proven to be a dynamic and rapidly evolving sector of the economy. On the coast of the prefecture there is a number of beautiful beaches that remain unspoiled by human activity. You can find small hotels and rooms to let in the most coastal villages while Parga stands out as the most developed tourist resort. The hinterland of the region also offers alternative routes such as hiking through the narrow paths near Acheron River and boat rides on its waters. Acheron River creates unique landscapes with great ecological and natural interest. This remarkable ecosystem is included in the nature protection area of NATURA 2000. Near Preveza you will also find important archaeological sites such as ancient Nikopolis and the Oracle of Acheron.
Preveza has regular air connection with Athens via Aktio and road connection to all major cities of the country. The coastal national road Preveza - Igoumenitsa connects the two cities (distance: 95 km). Also, through Igoumenitsa, Preveza is connected with Italy and therefore with the rest of Europe.
