Karditsa Prefecture
The prefecture of Karditsa belongs to the western part of the region of Thessaly. The local economy is based on agriculture. The prefecture of Karditsa is mainly a low-lying area, but it also includes important mountains which belong to the northern part of the mountain range of Agrafa. This prefecture is attractive to visitors because of its beautiful landscape, important historical background, traditional villages and summer festivals. At Agrafa you can see the artificial Plastiras Lake, which is easily accessible by car. The administrative center of the prefecture is the city of Karditsa and some important towns are Mouzaki and Sofades.
Karditsa, a town of almost 62,000 inhabitants according to the census of 2011, is located approximately in the middle of the plain of Thessaly, next to the tributary of Pinios River (known as "River of Karditsa"). The city is famous for its nice town planning, pedestrian streets, bicycle lanes, and municipal public bicycle rental system. The building of the Municipal Market in the center of the town stands out for its beauty. It was built between 1925 and 1930 by Hennebique Francois Coignet Company, and has become a monument of European architectural heritage. Also, in the center of the city, there is the beautiful grove of Pafsilipo with the Church of Constantine and Helen.
