The Prefecture of Rethymno is one of the four prefectures of Crete. It is located in the centre of Crete between the prefectures of Chania and Heraklion and attracts thousands of visitors. It is the most mountainous region of the island and it borders with Lefka Ori on the West (meaning "White Mountains") and with Psiloritis mountain on the East. It is considered the most picturesque region of Crete and its landscape is characterized by magnificent canyons, vineyards, evergreen forests, sparkling rivers and lakes, sandy beaches and high mountains with caves.
You will find beautiful sandy beaches on the north coast (Cretan Sea) as well as on the south coast of the island (Libyan Sea). The most popular beaches on the northern part are Rethymno, Episkopi and Panormo. On the southern part the most popular beaches are Plakias, Damnoni, Triopetra, Aghios Pavlos, Korakas and Ammoudi. Also, Preveli Lagoon (near the Monastery of Preveli) is a spectacular sandy beach with palm trees. The region is also well known for its interesting walking routes and paths in the mountains where you can admire the rare flora and fauna.
